This wiki is a meeting place for project participants and selected outside parties involved in the Mersea marine oil spill fate prediction demonstration activities in the Mersea Integrated Project (WorkPackage 12.3). It is hosted and maintained by the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (met.no).

How to use the wiki? Look here

The main purpose of this wiki is to exchange and disseminate information and data from the various demonstration experiments performed in the fall of 2007 and winter of 2008. These demonstrations are carried out as part of WorkPackage 12.3 of the Mersea Integrated Project. The purpose of the demonstrations is to show the benefits of using Mersea ocean forecast data in an important maritime security application, in this case oil spill fate forecasting.

Demonstration type: Drifter deployment for forecast validation

Start: Drifter deployment from 17 September 2007

Lead: OC-UCY

Contact: George Zodiatis (gzodiac@ucy.ac.cy)

Summary: OC-UCY will deploy surface drifters to emulate a surface oil spill in the Eastern Mediterranean south of Cyprus beginning 17 September 2007. Satellite tracking of drift positions 2-3 weeks. Perform oil spill simulations to forecast the fate of the “oil spill”. Each participant will supply oil spill forecast data and/or graphical results directly to the users or to OC-UCY. Results from all partners will be converted to a common format and presented in a common graphical tool, e.g., GoogleEarth. The forecast results will be analyzed against the observed drifter tracks and reported.

Drifters deployed 20:00Z 17.09.2007 off SW coast of Cyprus. Three drifters have been deployed at varying distances from the coast (see Deployment sites). They will be referred to as drifter North (N), drifter Middle (M) and drifter South (S) according to the deployment positions.

From George Zodiatis, 20 Sept 2007

The S drifter is drifting southeast along the periphery of the Cyprus anticyclonic eddy (Zodiatis et.al 2005) and the MEDSLIK oil spill predictions as you can see from kml are in good agreement with the trajectory of the S drifter.

The N drifter initially was drifted westward, with an anticyclonic movement. The MEDSLIK predictions shown also a westward movement but with a cyclonic movement.

The M drifter moving eastward, while the MEDSLIK predictions initially shown a large dispersion with no significant eastward or westward movement, similar to those of MF.

However, when we starting the MEDSLIK predictions on 19 Sept at 02:28, instead of 17th Sep, then the oil spill predictions at M drifting slowly eastward.

The sea currents forecasting data in the region of the N and M drifters indeed are the main reasons that the MEDSLIK oil spill predictions are not in good agreement with the trajectory of the N and M drifters. Similar situation is faced by MF predictions.

Demonstration type: Ad hoc response to an actual oil spill incident

Lead: met.no

Contact: Bruce Hackett (Bruce.Hackett@met.no)

Summary: met.no and MF perform oil spill simulations with Mersea forcing data to forecast the fate of the oil spill, comparing with Norwegian national service (met.no) as a baseline. The forecast results will be compared and analyzed against the observed oil spill drift.

Description of the accident:

In connection with loading oil from the Statfjord A loading buoy onto a tanker, raw oil was accidentally leaked into the sea on the morning of 12 December 2008. A large diameter loading hose ruptured and released approximately 4000 cubic meters of raw oil in the course of about 1 hour. The Statfjord A loading buoy is operated by StatoilHydro AS, who also had the responsibility for remedial action on the oil spill. The Norwegian Coastal Authority (KV) monitored the action in its capacity as the national authority responsible for pollution emergency response.

  • Spill location: 61.2833º N, 1.9167º E (61º 15.34' N, 1º 51.23' E)
  • Spill depth: probably surface or near-surface
  • Spill duration: approx 1 hour ending at 0817 utc on 12 December 2008
  • Oil type: closest to Statfjord C Blend

Weather conditions in the area were reported as severe. Shortly after the spill was stopped, the Statfjord A platform reported wind speed of 45 knots from the south measured at the flare, and wave height of about 7 meters measured visually. Other observations and numerical weather prediction analyses indicate somewhat lower values. Nonetheless, the wind and sea-state were severe enough to exceed the limits of the cleanup and retention equipment available, so that the oil spill evolved essentially untreated. The heavy seas and wind persisted for the following days, causing the slick to separate into streaks. By 14 December, the oil slick was reduced and dispersed to the point that StatoilHydro and the Norwegian authorities ceased all attempts at remedial action, and by 16 December no oil was detectable on the surface.

Demonstration type: Scenario demonstration of global capability

Lead: met.no

Contact: Bruce Hackett (Bruce.Hackett@met.no)

Summary: met.no and MF perform oil spill simulations with Mersea forcing data to forecast the fate of a fictitious oil spill in the Agulhas region. The scenario is a oil spill from a large tanker, optionally including ship drift forecast.

Scenario description

Tanker leaks oil after a collision incident at position 31.0 deg S 31.5 deg E. Alternative 1: tanker maintains position during spill duration. Alternative 2: tanker loses power as a result of collision and comes adrift.
